Copyrights, Permissions and Requests 1952-1962.

This series consists of correspondence pertaining to requests made by the Women's Missionary Society/United Lutheran Church Women for permission to use material owned and copyrighted by other churches, individuals, and publishing houses. The correspondence is from 1952 to 1962. These requests were generated when the society was publishing a book, hymnal, material for the annual week of prayer, monthly meeting program guide, or some other publication and needed permission to use an excerpt, prayer, hymn or quote. The Education Department was responsible for making these particular requests for permission. Authors of this correspondence include Margaret C. Gold, Editor; Betty Edwards, Education Secretary; Ethel Detzer, Associate Secretary; Doris Lund, Education Office Secretary; Josephine Darmstaetter, WMS Executive Secretary; and LaVonne Althouse, Editor. Correspondence from the WMS/ULCW would include an explanation of what material they were requesting permission to use, and the context in which that material would appear in their publication. There is some correspondence from other organizations requesting permission to use WMS/ULCW items, but the majority of the correspondence was generated by the WMS/ULCW. The last folder in the series contains copies of "Certificates of Registration of a Claim to Copyright in a Book Published in the United States of America." The WMS/ULCW filed these with the United States Copyright Office. These records are from 1955-1960. This form was used by the WMS/ULCW to secure a copyright on works they authored. The records are arranged chronologically.
